I’ve been seeing this baking soda and cornstarch clay recipe all over social media and decided to give it a try. The ratio is 2 parts baking soda to 1 part cornstarch to 1.24 parts water, cook until it becomes like mashed potatoes.

I wanted a really smooth clay and it does get a nice finish but your hands and work surface will be very powdery and gritty afterwards. Easy to clean up though. It cuts easily and is soft enough for little kids, though that also means it’s soft enough for them leave mush marks they may not have intended.

We rolled the clay to about a 1/4″ thick, with some ornaments being up to half an inch due to small kids. Overnight was not enough time to airdry and I didn’t feel like trying to dry them in the oven at the moment. I accidentally knocked one off the counter this morning and it shattered, so these are definitely on the more delicate side.

Apparently you can keep it in a sealed container in the fridge for up to a week. I tried to use it again just now for a second round of ornaments (after 1 night in the fridge) and it was harder to get a smooth finish this time. I still got some usable ornaments but they definitely look homemade.

I haven’t made cinnamon dough yet but so far the salt dough is the leader in terms of sturdiness and kid-friendly ornament-making.
